She recently made the Pretty Basic Shawl by Janina Kallio . It's a beautiful shawl pattern and I love what Barbara did with it.

She used one of my favorite hand dyed yarns, in fact it's the yarn that I use for my picture here on the blog.
I had just posted my Foothills Sock and my daughter and I had a trip to New Orleans planned. Along with that my mom had been hospitalized twice, my uncle passed away and my great-aunt has had a very serious stroke. A lot to handle, YES, can it be done, YES. <span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">
So where do I start?
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">Let's just talk about the happy things. New Orleans was AMAZING! This is a city that you much experience for yourself. I am serious about this. We were treated so well, and everyone that we came in contact with was so kind and friendly. The city kind of reminds me of a big city on a limited amount of land. There is something to do every minute of the day, and the food industry there is nothing like I have ever experienced. My daughter, (Sara) got to meet the Executive Chef for Emeril's New Orleans, and got a full tour of where she will be working. She is so excited and I am for her also. She has a place to live and April 5th, we will be moving her down there. The apartments are so nice. River Garden Apartments on St. Andrews. Now that has it's own set of problems since the original plans got changed. So we are looking for someone to drive down there with us. Long story. Anyway, the Tuesday evening we were there, the chef invited us for dinner. We were treated so well. I have never seen a dinner service so on point. We sat at the chef's bar, looking into the kitchen being able to watch everything that was cook and watching the back kitchen staff. What an amazing experience. If you would like to see some fantastic photos of the restaurant , menu, staff, etc check out this link. <span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">Emeri's New Orleans.

<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;"> Creatively New Orleans was such an inspiration. So many artists there, and new ideas. On this next trip down there I hope to spend a little more time talking to the local artists and hanging out in the yarn shops.

<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">While all this has been going on I've been expanding my hand dyeing skills. <span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">Mixed Berries & Cream<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;"> and <span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">Bermuda<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;"> are just a couple of the new techniques and colorways to come. I really appreciate the women who have willing and graciously shared what they have learned but more important I appreciate and am so grateful that these women love to share their knowledge in hopes that you will take what they have learned and make it your own, and turn it into "your own". Our talents and gifts will never grow and they will die with us, unless we share them, unless we plant those seeds into someone elses dreams. (soap box warning, LOL) <span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">These ladies do not have a heart of competition, but a giving heart because they are confident in what they do, and what they know.

<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">So off I go to start an evening of dyeing. The coffee is ready and the music is rockin'.

<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;"><span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">The Foothills Sock is now available on Ravelry and <span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">SmokyMountainColors<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">. I have to thank Cristi for the inspiration for the sock with the Twisted Edge. It's awesome. Here is a link for you to check out her wonderful knitted items. <span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">http://turtlegirl76.com<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;"> .
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">Now how about a little catch up. :-)
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">It's been way too long and I have really missed blogging. But, I now have a good reason for updating and loading you all with photos. This afternoon I am headed with my daughter to New Orleans where she will be working at Emeril's. One of Emeril Lagasse's restaurants. Also I have to brag on my son, he is getting so close to his dream of being in the military. He has lost 60 lbs. He looks so great, and he is so healthy, loosing the weight the right way.
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">Right after I published the Foothills sock everything got crazy. Also going on at this time is my mom's health has declined and she has been pretty sick. I had to take her to the hospital Friday. We missed her brother's funeral because of it. So you can see, I have had my hands full. The good news is that I have some yarn that is waiting to get dyed. A few of you have requested a colorway that will be the first one I do. As soon as they are dry, you will get an email from me. You know who you are :-)
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">I have an update about the <span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">Foothills Sock<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">. A friend of mine who is also a indie dyer, MoonT of <span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">Moon Holler<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;"> (you can find her on Etsy and on Ravelry) is knitting my sock in some of her beautiful hand dyed. Check it out. I think it's amazing and refreshing when women can support each other. There is truly room for all of us and all our gifts and <span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">dreams.
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">I have a few new things for you on SmokyMountainColors. First off there is a new coupon code. The first Monday of every month use FIRSTMONDAY to get 20% off. Another code is for FREE shipping between March 9-15. Since these are the dates I'm in New Orleans, everything will be shipped when I get home. <span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">MARCH915 .

Well it's all that I've been working on today. Trying to come up with a good name for my new sock pattern has turned into me over-thinking it. So I'm working on the pattern layout, editing and the chart, hopefully by the time I'm done a name will come to me. One thing about my patterns, it is very important to me that each pattern reads like I'm sitting there with you. That you have a knitting instructor taking you step by step.
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">Now I'm really excited about what I woke up to and have to share it. I was getting a notice on my phone that I received a new email. When I checked there was an email from <span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">Kickstarter<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;"> and I had gotten two people making donations. It made my day. I am so grateful and excited.
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">Here is a closing thought for you. We tend to always be looking for something big to happen for us in the future, (you know that "one day....) but, what if we applied that same expectation and hope every morning when we got up for just that day? Try it, and see what happens, you have nothing to lose and something amazing to gain.
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">Blessed Be
She suggested that I look into Kickstarter. It's a program that hooks up artists with people who want to invest small amounts into different businesses for tax purposes. So I went and checked it out. MAN, was I surprised at the amount of money that some of these very talented artists raised. I in fact found two that I'm going to support. Anyway, with all that said I jumped in and created my Kickstarter project. I based my project on just what I need to finish launching Smoky Mountain Colors into the Craft and Fiber Festival world. It's pretty exciting, and each person that donates gets something special from me, according to their donation. So if you have a minute, check out my link.
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">If you like it, please share it with your friends. Thank you so much!Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16014898902579841935noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-11499451.post-28810575996620159432014-01-25T09:01:00.001-05:002014-01-25T10:42:05.015-05:00Coralicious Socks FINISHED!I am so excited that these socks are done and just about ready to give away. The stretchy pattern makes it a pretty safe assumption that they will fit just about every foot. For the person these are going to, I know that they don't like a very long leg. Their preference is really just a little bit above the ankle. So that's what I aimed for. Also a little finishing touch was added to the 1x1 ribbing. I chose to knit the knits through the back but make sure that you use a stretchy bind off. Sometimes doing a toe up sock, the bind off is a little too tight. So they are finished, and I love them and the pattern. Please check out the pattern on Ravelry and add these to your knitting plans, you won't be sorry.

In closing a BIG thank you to Snapper Knits (Paula) the designer for letting me share her wonderful pattern on the blog.
They weren't kidding on the news the other day when they said that the flu in Tennessee was at epidemic numbers. Since the three of us are out in the public everyday, working with people and being exposed to who knows what, I wasn't surprised when my son got hit first, then two days later, me and then a couples later my daughter. (It's funny now that we are just about over it) If we have to face it better now and better together. :-) The down side is that my son had a severe case of bronchitis. He's on all kinds of meds. Finally today we are seeing a little improvement.

So with all that. I just wanted to let you know that in a few days I'll be back with more knitting news and some news about Smoky Mountain Colors. (www.etsy.com/shop/smokymountaincolors )
Her favorite is needlepoint. As we talked I thought it would be wonderful to add a few of her items to SmokyMountainColors. Since we are about handmade, handcrafted, made in East Tennessee, she fit right in.
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">So the foot is done, the heel is turned and the heel flap is made. The first photo is of the heel turn. For the most part I usually prefer a short row heel. But, this heel turn and heel flap is so comfortable and easy to knit that I have incorporated it into other toe up socks that I've made. My only suggestion is if you have a thin or smallish heel, when you begin the heel turn, go down a needle size. I've had to do that when knitting socks for a friend. It works out wonderfully. Then when the heel flap is finished go back to the original needle size. Look how great and smooth the heel turn is and it flows right into the heel flap.

<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">This photo is of the connection of the gusset stitches and the heel. I would like to note here that the pattern calls for M1's. Paula uses the K1f&b but she suggests that you can use the M1 that you prefer. When it comes to the decreases the pattern calls for the SSK and P2tog. Recently I learned a little trick to the SSK. The first stitch I slip as to purl, the second stitch I slip as to knit. I just like how it looks. If you haven't tried it before, now's the time.î

<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">These photos are of the finished heel and heel flap. I also wanted to show you the instep. I wear a size 8 1/2 shoe if that helps give you a little idea of the sizing.

<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">So now it's time to decide how many repeats to do for the leg and how much of a cuff will look good then bind off and cast on for the second sock. Another wonderful things about this pattern is that it is easy to customize. Everyone likes their socks a little different. Finished photos will be next!

<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">A new thing for 2014 here on the blog is I'm going to start sharing <span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">a pattern and my thoughts on it and the yarn as I knit it. Maybe you will even want to knit a long with me and post your commits and questions. Here is the first one.
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">Pattern: Coralicious Socks (found on Ravelry )

<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">Yarn: Kollage Yarns Sock-a-licious (found Here )

My Ravelry Project Page (found Here)

<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">Over the years I have knitted many pairs of socks, but there has been one pattern that I have knitted that I always look forward to and actually hunt yarn to make these. A couple of years ago I made these socks for a place I worked as a sample to show how the Mountain Colors yarn would look made up. At that time, I knew this pattern was special. So recently I found a skein of one of my favorite sock yarns, Kollage Yarns, Sock-a-licious, on sale and knew when I seen the yarn it would be perfect for this sock.
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">The Designer is <span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">Paula McKeever<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;"> and her blog is<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;"> SnapperKnits<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">. The link to Paula, goes to her Designer page on <span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">Ravelry<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;"> so you will get to see all of her designs.

Coralicious is a very well written pattern. The sock pattern is knitted toe up and if you have not tried that, this is a good time to start. Personally I enjoy toe up socks, you have the ability to do some sizing and it's always a good thing after putting all the time into knitting a pair of sock that they fit. :-)

Here are a couple of photos from the beginning.
I know that some people avoid patterns because they are afraid of the technique because it looks too complicated or it just makes them nervous. That makes me sad. We should always be tackling something that makes us a little nervous. Where would we all be right now if we hadn't done thing that gave us "butterflies"?
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">I am working with my students on taking on a more challenging project every time they finish one. And I am so proud of them. Within a few months, they are knitting in the round, doing advanced cables and taking on their first sweaters. What an awesome group. SOOOOO, I am asking you, as a fellow knitter, as a friend, what is your next challenge? What are you wanting to learn but find yourself putting it off. Short rows? Cables? Finishing? Well I teach, but I can't get to you I'm going to suggest following the link below and just checking out what Craftsy has to offer. I have taken several of their classes, just to see the instructor, the class material, and what is covered. It's impressive. Plus once you bought the class, its yours forever, you can watch the videos over and over AND ask questions. They also have free classes. Now knitting isn't their only subject. I'm taking all kinds of things, but when it comes to learning techniques, being able to stop the video, and see close ups, at your own pace, this just might be what you are looking for. I know when short rows came out, some loved them and some were totally freaked out, but, now that technique is main stream and you see it all the time.
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">Ok, so here is the link, just click on it and check it out. <span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">Craftsy<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;"> (Don't forget to let me know what you think)
We are in sweater weather where I live and if it's not sweater weather for you, maybe you just might want to knit a beautiful sweater. This class on Craftsy will help you. You Choose your own sweater and Eunny Jang instructs you a long the way.
Here is the class overview.
Join inspiring instructor Eunny Jang and use her included top-down sweater pattern as a base for creating a perfectly personalized sweater. Cast on and choose any of three different neck styles: a casual lowered neck, classic crew neck or a high neck you can turn into a cozy turtleneck or modern funnel neck. Learn to add a wedge yoke, banded yoke or sideways yoke, and Eunny will guide you through customizing it with lace, colorwork or cables. Then, find out how to create the sweater body in a cropped, A-line tunic or shaped pullover style, before knitting short, bracelet or full-length sleeves. Bring your sweater together with a variety of beautiful edge finishes, and showcase your style every time you wear it.
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">When I began this Dorset journey I had no idea where it would lead. Dorset was a new fiber for me to learn about. I have to say that I really like it. As I have posted before I went back to a colorway that I used a long time ago, but this time I used Jacquard dyes and was very please with how everything turned out. In fact it took the dye amazingly well.

So then it was time to knit. Since I have read and been told that Dorset is great for socks, of course that was the direction I went. I just wanted to find out what everyone was talking about. So on size US 1.5 circulars the test started.

The knitting experience was different. The Dorset makes a very solid fabric, because it grabs and clings to the stitches beside it. That makes a warm sock. To make gauge I did have to adjust the tension in how I let the yarn run through my fingers. After that, it was smooth sailing. The stitches are defined, close together and exactly what I was hoping for. Now I don't know if I would wear these in the Summer, but anytime it was chilly or cold, a Dorset fiber sock would be the way to go.

I had planned on just knitting one sample sock, but after finishing the first one, and enjoying the sock and it's fit, the second sock is on the needles as we speak. :-)

So I'm encouraging you to try some Dorset, I have several 4 oz bundles in the Etsy shop waiting for you to enjoy.

We obtains one of her cleaned and processed batts and I couldn't wait to start spinning it. Here is a photo of what the batt looked like after I divided down to 4oz bundles.
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">As you can see it has a beautiful color, it's clean and a lot can be spun from 4oz. I've found it be airy and a little stretchy (which is fantastic for nice warm socks). Now I have to be honest and say that almost everything I spin has some silk or bamboo, or something in it to made it super soft. This is one of the few things that I have spun straight up, not blended. So with that said, I feel comfortable saying that it's a little softer that Lamb's Pride wool. If you have never used Lamb's Pride I guess it's comparable to Cascade 220 and maybe Galway.
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">So here is the next photo. I spin a little on the thin side, mostly fingering to sport weight. I spun this so that I could knit some socks since everyone has been telling me what great socks this fiber makes. :-) There is about 400 yards, 2-ply.

<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">So my next step is to dye see how this yarn handles dye. I have changed the dyes I use and this gave me an opportunity to try out my new "goodies." Needless to say I was pretty excited about both learning how the new dye worked and seeing how the Dorset took the color. Let me insert a little side story, when I first started dyeing I did a colorway that I loved but sold it. So I've been looking forward to dyeing it again, and this was my opportunity. There is nothing like bright reds and yellows blending into a clean crisp orange, then that fading and then adding a touch of green and lightening it up to a lime so it will the blend into the color pattern. So here are my results.

<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">Many of you know that I have a real attachment to this year. I thought for days whether I would list it on Etsy shop or not. Well I did, and after a couple of weeks I am so happy to say that it found a good home. :-) I know for a fact that this yarn will be knitted into something beautiful, and will be well taken cared for. One of the things that makes this purchase so special is that it was purchased as a gift.
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">Now I have to dye some more roving for me!
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">Once I shipped the yarn and heard that it had been a huge success, it hit me that I wonder if other hand dyers and spinners out there get feed back about their work. I know I try to let the people that I order special yarns and roving from know how much I appreciate it and sometimes send a photo of a finished yarn or knitted project. Do any of you do that? Ravelry Groups give us a great opportunity to share our appreciation and photos. Next time you finish that special project, drop an email to the designer or dyer or spinner and let them know how you feel about the project. I am sure they will love it. Sometimes a kind word will make someone's day. :-) Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16014898902579841935noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-11499451.post-50936253105286092932013-11-04T06:06:00.001-05:002013-11-04T06:06:00.307-05:00Inspiration
Last night while I was walking Gunther we came across this beautiful plant.
